Table of Content

The previous sections have described the metaverse in the Web 3.0 context. In this section, we will specifically discuss the basic concepts for companies to participate in Web 3.0.

Easy NFT sales kills content

When NFT became popular, various businesses said, "Japan is a content-rich country, so NFT is a good match" and they went to companies with IP content rights that everyone knows, "Let's sell NFT! We'll sell it for 100 million yen!”

As a result, most of the Japanese content has not been converted to NFT and remains untouched. IP content exists as IP content because it is a viable business at this point in time, and after some business wins, it is possible to win the game by simply introducing powerful content in the same way. There is no necessity to enter into NFT, which is not well understood and the risks are not yet apparent.

In the first place, the lack of understanding of NFT among decision makers, combined with the nature of large corporations that cannot move without precedent, have resulted in the main examples of NFT in Japan being limited to the second-best plans of NBA Top Shot, a successful business overseas, being developed for baseball and soccer.

Normally, I might despair over Japan's lagging behind the rest of the world, but in this case, it is probably a good thing that NFT sales were not made easily. The easy conversion of IP content to NFT is an act that diminishes the support of existing fans.

A fundamental feature of NFT is its innovative ability to create an economic zone in which non-top professionals can also make money. NFT can be a new way for existing fans to monetize. In the figure, the new monetizable segment between the top professionals and existing fans is defined as "professional fans”.

For example, until now, illustrators had to be top professionals in order to earn a living because they could not get corporate jobs, but many people who used to draw pictures as a hobby are now entering the NFT market and seizing the opportunity to monetize their work.

When we hear about this, people who have the skills and motivation to contribute to the content are motivated, and the NFT matches professional fans with each other to form a community.

But there are all kinds of people in the world, and some people don't want to contribute just because the content is NFT. In fact, I think that is the majority.

When content suddenly becomes NFT, existing fans look incompetent

When differences in motivation are created within a community, the following trends occur.

  1. Those who are highly motivated will work harder.
  2. The community will be more active by promoting their efforts, and this will lead to income.
  3. Gap is created between those who work hard and those who don't in the community.
  4. Existing fans will be judged as those who are not working hard even though they are just enjoying the content as before.
